Originally, the only lubricants available were oil based. Common examples of such lubricants include KY-Jelly and Vaseline. Then came the first water based lubricants. They offered the advantage of not smelling or staining like the oil based variety could and washed off much more easily, while being safe to use with latex products. However, they still did not last as long as their oil based counterparts, and did not have quite the same lubricating power.
Today's modern high quality water based lubricants are very different, offering lasting, thick lubrication, while not staining or becoming sticky. They also offer a "wetter" more gliding feel than the oil based lubricants.
Silicone based lubricants are similar to the water based variety, in that they are safe to use with non-silicone sex toys and condoms (don't use them on anything made of silicone), and they have the added advantage of being water proof, and are great for under water use. They are generally a bit more expensive, but also are more concentrated and longer lasting than water based lubricants, so a little bit goes much further.

A big thing to remember when buying a lubricant, is that you get what you pay for. The more expensive the lubricant, the less you will need to use, and the less often it will need to be applied. A good idea is to try a few different brands, buy the small bottles until you find one that you like best, as different people find different products work well for them.
